"Surfers
Paradise Q1 at Night"

"This image of the Q1 was a last
minute thought after spending a few hours photographing the city
lights from the observation deck. Not happy with these images,
we decided to explore photo opportunities from around the bottom
of the Q1 building. This angle of the Q! took my eye for a
number of reasons. Firstly, the low level cloud was reflecting
the bright city lights. Secondly the large spot lights on top of
the Q1 were also creating large beams of light that were
piercing through this low level cloud. Lastly, the sweeping arch
of the front foyer and the impressive height of the building
gave great leading lines. Because of the height of the building
and only having a 28mm wide angle lens, I had to shoot on a
tripod from very low to the ground. (I ended up with a very
stiff neck trying to get into position while lying on my back to
position the camera). Lastly, I decided to capture the shot with
the White Balance set to Fluorescent. This help boost the colour
in the sky and neutralize the colour cast. To finish off the
image I added a little vignette to help draw the attention into
the centre of the frame.
