2009 PHOTO OF THE YEAR

"Telstra Tower"
Alan Dougans

"The Telstra tower in Adelaide, not one of the prettiest buildings in the world, but so so photogenic in a sci-fi kind of way. I love taking shots upwards, why? I think we all spend too much time looking down, and there's so much more above us, in many ways..... Having been involved in engineering projects all my life, starting life as draughtsmen and now an untrained and frustrated artist I love the more technical type shots, symmetrical and angular, with muted colours. I'd also just purchased my second set of Cokin filters ( I say second as the first set was probably 30 years ago ). I find the graduated greys and blues are great for this type of photography, it pulls down the brightness of the sky whilst retaining the interest and allows the camera to concentrate on exposure of the main body, it also add a kind of surreal sky which I love.

This was taken during a strange period, from photographic point of view. For nearly 8 weeks my beloved Canon 5d mkII was with it's creators in Sydney having open heart surgery, when it died I was devastated ( sad really! ). However, I dusted down the old trusty 30d, reassured it that I really did still love it despite having consigned it to the bottom of the camera bag for the previous 6 months, strapped on the brilliant EF-S 10-22mm and out we went. That one shoot, wandering round Adelaide, has resulted in several publications on OneExposure (difficult), a new highest score and blue ribbon on DPC, two ADPOTD photos of the month, and of course, this ADPOTD photo of the year! Just to goes to show, it's not the camera, it's your frame of mind.
